Oscar Predictions Bound to Go Wrong

Posted: February 24, 2012 in Uncategorized

I shouldn’t even try this year.

I shouldn’t even bother with making predictions on Hollywood’s biggest night. Why? Because I think I saw maybe two movies at the theatre in 2011, and neither are nominated for an award. In my defense, it’s been a busy year and I maintain my boycott of going to the movies and paying $20 for poor films. I can wait until it comes out on DVD … three months later. No rush.

But, Sunday is the Oscars and depending on when the Daytona 500 finishes (it will be on tape delay due to ministry activities) it should be a long night of acceptance speeches, orchestra music, and Billy Crystal trying to end the show before midnight … on Tuesday.

Ah yes, Crystal returns. Sanity has indeed made its way back to Hollywood. Now, if we could get a decent rotation going between Crystal, Chris Rock, and Jon Stewart life would be good on Oscar night. I’m not going to hold my breath, and you shouldn’t either.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, it’s time for predictions that are bound to go wrong. A blog tradition here where I try to make some guess as to what will happen, and end up with egg on my face by the time it’s all over. For the record, I prefer my eggs scrambled.

So, here are  my predictions for the major awards to be announced on Sunday night (we think between the hours of 8:30 p.m. and 2 a.m.).

Actress in a Supporting Role - If there is one movie I am disappointed that I did not see in the theatre it was “The Help.” It was an important movie, and should make a strong showing on Oscar night. That said, Octavia Spencer knocks off Melissa McCarthy for the win.

Actor in a Support Role - I think Jonah Hill stands a good shot, but I want Nick Nolte. Who doesn’t want to see Nick Nolte on stage? That would be awesome.

Directing - Michael Hazanavicious will win for “The Artist.” Later Sunday night, a copy editor on deadline will scream, “That can’t be how you spell his name.”

Best Actress - It should be Viola Davis for “The Help,” but Meryl Streep wins for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher.

Best Actor - In an upset of major proportions, Brad Pitt wins for “Moneyball.”

Best Picture - “The Artist.” All other films are just happy to be nominated.
